The day was full of activities including a 5K race timed by Run On! and a one mile fun run and pet walk. Over 300 people from the community showed up to run, cheer on friends, and partake in the family friendly activities such as a pet parade, bounce house, and face painting. Participants received an official DAwg Run tee shirt and running gear. Four legged friends were not forgotten; pets received goodie bags full of dog bones and treats.
The day was full of winners. CJ Stafford took home top prize as the 5K overall winner with a race time of 20:17.00. Lisa Huggins was the 5K top female finisher with a time of 22:14.00. Many raffle prizes were awarded including the use of a Toyota Prius for the weekend courtesy of Cowboy Toyota which was won by Dallas Academy parent James Kennedy.
The event was planned by Melanie White and Marlene Hewitt, both avid runners and teachers at Dallas Academy. Terry Welch, a Dallas Academy Board of Trustees member and local runner, offered guidance and expertise from his own running career. Welch’s law firm, Brown & Hofmeister, served as one of the event sponsors. Parent volunteer, Jesse Diaz of iDiaz, offered creative advice to help execute a well designed event.
The DAwg Run raised over $30,000 from event sponsorships and participant registration. The funds will be used for student scholarships to help make Dallas Academy’s specialized education for learning different students a possibility for more local students. Additional funds will be used to update technology in classrooms, textbooks, and student activities. Dallas Academy is grateful to Capital One Bank, who served as the lead sponsor, as well as the dozens of other local businesses and individuals for their generous support in making the event a huge success.
The event was such a success that Dallas Academy is already busy planning next year’s event!
