Dallas Academy Students Take a Holiday Road Trip

Dallas Academy students kicked off the holiday season with a musical production of Holiday Road Trip. The variety show was adapted for the Dallas Academy stage from Hal Leonard's works including Holiday Road Trip and Santa’s Holiday Play List. Music contributions were composed by John Jacobson, Mac Huff, and Roger Emerson and the show also included many classic Christmas musical standards. Holiday Road Trip was directed and produced by Dallas Academy’s Music Therapist and Director of Music and Performing Arts, Molly Grogan, MT-BC. Sydney Daly, Dallas Academy’s Theater Assistant, served as the show’s assistant director and stage manager. The show featured the talents of thirty-five students in middle and high school, eleven faculty performers, and countless volunteers who helped bring the performance to life. Dallas Academy’s Department of Music and Performing Arts’ annual holiday musical is a favorite campus tradition and never fails to delight audiences.

Holiday Road Trip features Uncle Nick who leads a musical journey across the country in his magical RV “Reindeer Van.” During their travels, his band of children discovers our nation’s many regional musical styles and unique holiday traditions. The magical RV makes stops to our country’s best musical cities. In New Orleans, students enjoy a Cajun holiday complete with Zydeco music. In Miami, students dance in the streets during a Latin street party. The van visits the beaches of California to witness singing surfer dudes. The trip makes a stop on Broadway in New York to see the big city lights. Dallas Academy’s talented faculty members even make a special appearance as elves grooving in the Motor City. The road trip would not be complete without stops in Texas for a country Christmas celebration. The show concludes with a surprise visit from Santa Claus who leads the audience in singing many favorite Christmas songs.

Stars of the show included the talented Dallas Academy signers who served as the chorus of the show and effortlessly sang and danced throughout the performance. Other lead performers included Jake Mayor as “Uncle Nick,” Maddie Medaris, Noah Carollo, Audrey Merlick, and Will Vinson as the “RV Kids,” and Lillian Read as “Natalie the Navigator.” Colton Stringer, Jack Huhner, Evan Bailey, Derek West, Greg Spencer, and Thomas Eades provided entertainment as the “California Surfer Dudes.” Dallas Academy’s own headmaster, Dr. John Hill, surprised audiences in the role of Santa Claus. The show came to life thanks to a colorful set and beautiful art, props, and costumes. The show was co-produced and directed by Molly Grogan and Sydney Daly. Dallas Academy alumna Dria Bentley served as Production Assistant. Jay Stanford served as Technical Director. Students Peyton Menzel, Luna Miller, and Annarose Collins served as tech and spotlight assistants. Student Faith Giadolor served as the Costume Mistress and even made many of the costumes by hand! The art and carpentry team included the talents of Blake Hennegan, Matt and Sharon Bagley, Joe Bentley, and Sally Phillips Tygh. Parents Amy Huhner, Julie Orchard Bailey, Mary Spencer, Bliss Nauert, and Veronica Boy served as production volunteers. Bringing Holiday Road Trip to life on stage would not have been possible without the dedication of so many incredible students and parents.

Audiences loved taking a musical holiday journey across our great nation. The show ended on a wonderful note when performers and audiences alike gathered together to sign holiday classics such as “Deck the Halls,” “Jingle Bells,” “Jolly Ol’ St. Nicholas,” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” By the end of the performance, everyone was feeling the spirit of the season.
